Immanuel Kant's thought
Mario Ariel González Porta
The book “The thought of Immanuel Kant” opens the collection “Introduction to the great philosophers”, published by Editora Monergismo, intending to be, in the words of Prof. Dr. Mario Porta, “an introduction course to the thought of Immanuel Kant in its epistemological and ethical dimension”. This first volume is aimed primarily at philosophy students, however, it can also be useful for a mere philosophy enthusiast or someone who wishes to expand their general knowledge. Furthermore, the book aims to fulfill an essentially didactic function, explaining the assumptions that give meaning to the problem of the Critique of Pure Reason, the author also shows us his method of studying philosophy.
Brentano's School
Mario Ariel González Porta
Franz Brentano must be seen as part of the movement of reaction to the speculative idealism that was imposed in the Germanic cultural context of the second half of the 19th century. Around him, an active group of disciples is configured, among which Edmund Husserl, Alexius von Meinong, Anton Marty, Kasimir Twardowski and Benno Kerry stand out. Brentano's school, in itself possessing an extremely fruitful immanent development, plays a decisive role in the origins of contemporary philosophy, being the matrix of ideas and a necessary interlocutor in the process of formation of phenomenology and analytical philosophy.
Philosophy from its problems
Mario Ariel González Porta
Didactics and methodology of philosophical study The book appears in the Philosophical Readings collection. Philosophy has a reputation for being difficult, obscure, and even arbitrary. But much of the usual difficulties in understanding it are due to a misunderstanding of the "problem" with which philosophy deals. In this book, Mario Ariel González Porta offers a didactic and methodological option for the philosophical study based on the following principle: the understanding of the problem must constitute the essential nucleus, the axis, of the teaching of philosophy. This is a basic book, but not an introduction, because it presupposes a previous contact with philosophy. What is proposed here is a perspective of access to philosophy, focused on explaining how the study and teaching of this discipline can be improved, based on classroom experience and the author's dedication to understanding philosophy, the commitment of a lifetime. Here, too, is published the much-publicized article: "A Lecture on Kant".
Edmund Husserl - Psychologism, psychology and phenomenology
Mario Ariel González Porta
This book brings together a series of works that have as their thematic focus the problem of psychologism and the relationship between psychology and phenomenology in Edmund Husserl. These works were published between 1999 and 2010.
neo-Kantian studies
Mario Ariel González Porta
Neo-Kantianism is the philosophical movement that dominated German thought for fifty years (1875 – 1925) and with which they dialogue, polemic and from which phenomenology and hermeneutics as well as analytical philosophy are nourished. Fallen into oblivion because of the hegemony of the aforementioned trends, its study has experienced increasing momentum in recent years, which is beginning to be felt in the philosophical production of the Portuguese language.
Psychology and philosophy: studies on the dispute over psychologism
Mario Ariel González Porta
The process of separation between philosophy and psychology marks one of the decisive themes in the origins of contemporary philosophy, giving rise, as one of its developments, to the so-called quarrel over psychologism (Psychologismusstreit). It primarily emphasizes the question of the possibility or impossibility of reducing philosophy ― in particular, its normative disciplines, such as logic, ethics, and aesthetics ― to psychology. Such a quarrel is decisive for the formation of all the philosophical schools that emerged from the second half of the 19th century to the beginning of the 20th century, among which descriptive psychology, neo-Kantianism, phenomenology, hermeneutics and analytical philosophy stand out.
After Hegel. German Philosophy from 1840 to 1900
English translation by Gabriel Ferreira
English translation by Gabriel Ferreira. In this book, Frederick Beiser aims to fill in the gaps left by the standard view of German philosophy in the second half of the 19th century. In the period that followed Hegel's death, and which saw the unprecedented advance of the natural sciences, problems and quarrels emerged that would shape most of the philosophical questions that come to us today, such as those around materialism, methodology and the place of philosophy in the building of knowledge, historicism and the limits of scientific knowledge. Re-enacting these disputes, as well as their different responses, is, therefore, the great merit of this unavoidable work for those interested in the philosophy of the last two centuries.
